<whine> Anybody out there ever tear an intercostal muscle? If so, what helped, what didn't help, and did you ever get better? Is there hope for paddling again (doctor says no-no, for now)? Is it ok to paddle if it doesn't hurt while I'm doing it? It's been a month since I injured it (while paddling) by (a) using a different style paddle -- for the first time -- for an extended period, and (b) working harder than usual while paddling (because using an unfamiliar instrument). The first day or two it felt like whiplash in the whole upper right torso. Now, it's a real soreness activated by certain movements and deep breaths. I've just started chiropractic and ultrasound treatment. I was looking forward to going to the Bean kayak symposium -- and still am -- but was in particular looking forward to trying out boats, of course.... </whine> *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: PaddleWise_at_PaddleWise.net Subscriptions: PaddleWise-request_at_PaddleWise.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
It has been some time ago, but I suffered the same type of injury climbing. What I found helped a lot was: Anti-inflammatory drug like Ibupropin (lots of it, but it is hard on stomach and can cause a sore throat from thinning blood so much it makes the throat raw. Consult your physician). Ice and Heat. Ultrasound should help quite a bit. Are you sure that you don't have "Costocondritis" (sp?): which is an inflammation of the tissue between the ribs. It can be extremely sore and feels like you have broken a rib. Time will heel either one and I don't think you would be doing any further damage if it doesn't hurt to do something. But, I am not a doc. Fred California Kayaker At 10:33 PM 7/10/2000 -0400, Anne Burton wrote: ><whine> > >Anybody out there ever tear an intercostal muscle?
