There have been a few messages this morning regarding Doug Lloyd's trip
this
weekend to the Storm Islands, with references to the first trip that
apparently didn't go so well. Curiosity is killing me! If it's not
too
personal for Doug, could we get a Readers Digest version of what took
place
on the prior trip, and the significance to this second trip? >>

I'd rather not say anything too much right now, other than "Three guys
attempted to paddle from Bella Bella to Port Hardy on a pre season trip
in early April of '99. SE gales, difficult seas, and freezing snow
caused the men to make a poor decision to cross early from Cape Caution,
rather than continue down the exposed coast with the older paddler
Andrew who was ill-equipped -- when a nice morning sprang up. It didn't
stay nice, and an unknown net ebb along with a 35 knot SE gale turned a
two hour crossing to the mid-point Storm Islands into an 8-hour ordeal
complete with air-sea rescue and post-traumatic stress, and BC wide
embarrassment."

My heart has been racing "back and forth" this week, and I'd rather
leave for Port hardy with some peace of mind, rather than dredging up
the incident much more. The first post in April 2000 should not have
gone to PW in the first place, as Sea Kayaker Magazine has rights to the
story. Dave is still dealing with things, and he reads this list, so I
don't want to get things rocking again. Dave may attempt the Deserter
Group crossing in the fall. He still has "unfinished business" up there
too. I offered to go with him back to try the Storm crossing this coming
week, but I don't think Dave wants any where near that Island. I still
have great respect for Dave, despite all that happened, and don't want
to cause his heart to "race back and forth" either. I have the hardest
time finding strong, adventurous paddling partners, and hope Dave and
his new Jubilee and me can do some paddling together in the future.
Peace to you all, and prosperity in spirit.

Cheerio!
Doug, the BC guy
