Mine is certainly made of some sort of "string." But I don't find it uncomfortable (maybe I'm not quite as old as soft as you <g>). It has removably plastic "spreaders" at each end; if you take them off, it's even lighter and smaller to pack, but I liked the spreaders, as they keep the ends wider and make entry easier. I've not checked out the KTP website, but I have the impression that a lot of items in there come and go with availability. . . .
