The boat(baidarka) I'm thinking of was done with alder saplings from the 
builders yard, scrap 2 by 4s, and left over house paint.  All the money was 
spent buying a nice piece of canvas.  There's a picture of builder and 
boat at http://people.ne.mediaone.net/jkolsen/html/attendees.html (I 
verified the URL this time)  Unfortunately you can't see how curvy some of 
the saplings were.
