I thought I would mention this as I know the incident got international
coverage. One of our Club paddlers, David Winkworth, has just been notified
that he is to receive a bravery award for saving the life of a fellow
paddler on an expedition in the North of Australia last year. Dave is a very
experienced kayaker and designed and built my current kayak - Nadgee
Expedition. I owe a lot of my kayaking skills to Dave.

Dave and two other paddlers were doing a trip from Cairns to Thursday Island
in the top of Eastern Australia. With only a 100km to go on a small coral
kay fellow paddler Arunas was working on his kayak in knee deep water when a
4 metre crocodile came out of nowhere and grabbed him. The crocodile started
dragging him out to sea when Dave, who was standing nearby, jumped on the
back of the crocodile grabbing it around the waste. This gave it such a
fright that it took off.

The whole account is written up on

Amazing Story! You've got to love Oz! 9 of the worlds 10 deadliest snakes,
killer spiders, sea wasps, box jellies, great whites and salt water crocs! I
guess it's a great place to be in the pool business!

Yeah, its tough in Australia alright. 2 weeks ago we pulled a 3 foot sea
snake out of Sydney Harbour at the Manly Pier. Well we didn't actually
touch it we called the marine biologist down from the nearby shark aquarium
and he picked it up after we coaxed it onto the beach, explaining that it
was sick. But he did say that it is extremely deadly so we were well
advised not to have tried to handle it anyway.

Dave Winkworth's trick will take b bit of beating though. You can count the
survivors of croc attacks in this country on one hand!

Bob sounds like you might have been reading Bill Bryson's "A Sunburnt
Country". An American's view on Australia. I laughed all the way through it.

Cheers
