I read through all of the "How would you deal with this situation" there
was so much thoughtful information shared there that I took notes.

Much of the safety equipment that I used to use on my old Hobie Cat sail
boat has followed me into my kayak and one of the things that I didn't
see anyone mention in the postings that I read...A small canister of
compressed air ( similar to the one used in the inhalers that people
with asthma use), with a small air horn on the top. Small and handy, I
keep it close by just in case I need to summon help.

I'm sure that many of you adjusted the circumstances of the original
scenario and the one that came to my mind is one where there are people
around but either not close enough to hear or not noticing your plight.
Several blasts of this little bugger would leave no one wondering that
you were in distress. Be sure to hold it at arms length because the
noise that it makes could do some damage to your ears.

Thanks to all who posted on this important subject, I am currently a
flatwater recreational paddler, who until yesterday thought that the
sport performed at my level had little risk. I have wisely rethought
that frame of mind.
