I have one thing to offer on this topic.

[Mounting soapbox]

A LOT of the deaths attributed to not wearing a PFD happen in cold water. I
say that you should wear a PFD at all times when in water that's too cold to
spend the night in.

However, say you're in a group of experienced paddlers in calm water, with
the air and water temperatures both very high, and a PFD very handy... why
is it imperative to wear it?
