Just got a new carbon paddle and I love it! However,
my girlfriend also has one and, while paddling
yesterday, I noticed that I could barely pick her out
on the water at a quarter mile away. Has anyone come
up with a way to treat the black blades to improve
visibility? Tape? Paint? What colors? Your
experiences would be most welcome!

Carl

Some manufacturers have an optional reflective logo you can order when
you order your paddle (epic comes to mind). You can also put
reflective tape on the paddle shaft, next to the paddle itself.
Rumour has it that this works for night paddling as well.

Gemplers (a maker of safety and farm supplies) sells relective tape.
The really cool stuff is reflexite, but its costly. I couldn't afford
a whole roll of reflexite, so I bought a few strips of it instead.

Hi,

Personally, I found that the retroreflective Scotchlite tape motorcycling
shops sell is excellent for visibility; I figure if it's good enough to
make my helmet stand out in pitch dark at 65+ mph, that's a reasonable
recommendation.

I use a Werner carbon-fibre paddle, and will be putting loops of tape on
the shaft at regular intervals.

I have relective tape on my wood Cricket, which unfortunately looks
kinda tacky. If I get a carbon Whetstone, I'll put some on that one,
too.

You could take the stealth approach. I paddle a low profile carbon
boat, wear a dark green pfd and use a unadorned carbon paddle.

I fully realize I would have to rescue myself, and must stay alert to motor
traffic.
