subject: [Paddlewise] speed of towing swimmers

This question really pertains to whitewater boats, but I cannot think of a
better place to ask it. I've noticed that there is a noticeable between the
speed of towing swimmers to shore and the length of the towing kayaker's
boat. For example, an 11' boat is quite effective at rescuing swimmers
whereas my 8' playboat is extremely slow. The differences in speed are much
less noticeable when paddling without towing swimmers. Can anyone give a
good physical explanation why this is so?
Thanks,
kevin
