I'm pleased to report that the operation was a success. Linda rolled and played in the water for an hour and a half last night, yet when she removed the forward hatch cover, not a drop of water was to be seen. Looks like I may have spent $40 for new hatch covers unnecessarily. Kayaksport hatch covers may need two hands to remove (though as someone said, applying 303 makes it a lot easier), but I haven't seen one leak yet -- just the hatch rim!

Note: Trek & Trail apparently repairs these leaks by prying the hatch rim off the deck and replacing the gasket material. My way is much easier and works just as well -- so far.
