The mention of people showing up with a SOT hit home. I have paddled a couple
of SOT's while in Florida and Puerto Rico. It was ok but not my first choice.

This summer I took my BCU Coach 2 Assessment. As part of the assessment I was
given several students for about and hour with the goal of helping them
improve
some aspect of their paddling. Well, guess what, one of my students came
with a
fiberglass SOT. Now this was not a set up. This is what the student paddles
all the time. After taking a deep breadth the group decided they wanted to
focus on forward and sweep strokes. So away we went. I found the coaching I
gave applied to both SOT's and SUN's (sit underneaths). My SOT student came
away with some stroke improvement and things to work on.

Later in the day I jumped into the SOT and took it out for a spin.
Interesting
experience as I managed to capsize.

As someone who enjoys coaching I learned an interesting lesson that day. As
coaches we need to continue learning and gain new experiences. I may not want
to own a SOT but I will surely look for some opportunities to paddle them. In
fact this summer I have been trying to paddle a number of different kayaks to
understand their performance characteristics. Even got into the son's Tchaika
the other day and did some rolls - it's made for a small person and I weigth
in
over 200. Tight but doable.

Per Raph's previous note I will next spend some time in a double.

ps: I passed Coach 2
