Does anyone have suggestions re. voice and email communication on a paddle
expedition out of range of the normal cell phone systems? I'll not be in
need, (hopefully), of emergency communication but would like to be able to
send daily trip reports, make logistical connections and call my wife
occasionally for encouragement and reassurance. And... I'd like to do it
 cheaply.

Occasionally I have used a Globalstar satellite phone to call home from Baja.
My girlfriend's brother Pete leases one whenever we go there and charges it
to his business. I think the rate is a couple hundred for a month. The
phone is sent out and returned via UPS. You may be able to find a website for
a leasing company. Let me know if you can't find a source and I'll call him.

The way I do it cheaply - I bring Pete.
