[Paddlewise] hot kayaks!

The local paper had an interesting story last night

seems two kayakers (what type of boats the paper didn't say only that one was
16'.) were camping on and island in the Chilkat inlet near Haines. They built
a nice warm drift wood fire. Then just before going to bed they doused the
fire and went to sleep. They awoke at 6:30 am to discover that the fire had
spread from the beach to the low brush, along a 40' log, through a pile of
driftwood and devoured the plastic boats! ("It was like it burned with
intelligence" said one of the kayakers) All that was left was the rudder and
four feet of one boat. The other boat appearently was almost completely
consumed. (not enough for a souvenir according to the owner)

The kayakers had to hike out including wading across the cold Chilkat inlet at
low tide! They made it o.k.

I guess the moral is you can't have your kayak and heat it too.
