I have seen an email/satellite relay device used by a paddler in NWT in 99.(Was told that it cost ~$900.) I have also heard that the etrex GPS has an add-on feature similar to this. Again...would suggest that you ask at sci.geo.satellite-nav , as the tech-heads there will set you on the right path, quick! You might also consider one of the inmarsat systems (satellite phone)..pretty pricey though.
