I hadn't thought about that, but now that I do it does seem like everyone I run across sea kayaking is around my age (early 40's in my case). One exception, though, is children of people I know who sea kayak. I do know some people with college age kids who are avid kayakers, having learned from their parents. A parent could do worse, no? Sad, though, such young people dying. . .
