Hi,

A small group of us who have been doing a wide range of swim escorting
with our kayaks are working now to come up with good guidelines for
kayakers who are interested in doing this very important service for
fellow water people.

We have a closed listserve that will be the focal point of discussions
and ideas. We are limiting participants in order to keep down the
banter and not generate needless email traffic. Thusfar we have
gathered about a dozen kayakers and swim organizers from the New York
City and Washington DC areas. We are looking toward other regions for
swim-escort experienced kayakers and swim organizers to broaden the
perspectives going into what will develop.

What will eventually emerge, we hope, are guidelines, training tips,
gear needs, what-if scenarios, etc. All of these will be placed on a
website and possibly be printed up as well as result in some articles
for major paddling and swimming magazines, i.e. basically freely
distributed. The website could also wind up listing swims around the
country (and the world) in which swim organizers are looking for kayaker
participation.

If interested, please contact me via private email telling me something
about where you have done such swim escorting, the kinds of swims, ideas
you have come up with etc. We are trying to get a wide range of
experience to come up with information with the widest application. I
will then forward your name and email address to the person running the
listserve and she will take it from there in setting you up for access
to it.

If you know some one who would be a good candidate, either kayaker or
swim organizer, for this discussion group but is not likely to be on
these listserves, please pass on to me their name and email address.

thanks,

ralph diaz
