Actually the Coast Guard does charge now in certain cases
.... except in extreme emergency. In most cases they will
refer you to commercial assistance, if available, and in
case that there is not immediate danger to life.

The reasoning behind it is the extreme 'cuts' by the present
administration in the Coast Guard budget .... and the fact
that they are both under-manned and under-equipped.

I agree that we all pay income taxes and this should be a
priority item ... but you would be surprized at the wasted
energy and man power the Coast Guard spends ... and the
costs ... of people running out of gas in their
super-powered speed boats ... or 'lost' ... or just deciding
that they want to spend extra time at their favorite
'fishing hole' and not telling their families. Lost and /
or over due ... extensive searches ...
