I was not going to reply to Fred's initial statement but there has been
several replies saying what a great email it was. I think when you make
comments like "we are racists but not as racists as those in the other
countries" then proceed to name several destroys the international flavour
of this list. Especially when it can't be substantiated. I refer to Fred's
statement.

"Are we a racist culture? I believe so. I think many are so not out of
specific decisions, but out of ignorance and fear preferring to be around
those most like themselves. Less than other places in the world (Japan,
Australia, China), but racist none the less."

Was this statement intended to be rude to those other countries or just
based on ignorance. It ruined what would have been a fine statement. This
was not intended to start a flame war just sticking up for my country and
having lived overseas and widely travelled, I am aware of the misconceptions
that get reported in overseas media.

And this seems to have drifted way off the topic of kayaking.

David
Australia.

I agree with everything you said including your last comment. This
discussion has taken a turn off-course and towards a non-productive route.
I think those who are interested in continuing this discussion should do
so via private email.
