Mark, et al,
The report as posted to PW last April 10th on the one year anniversary
of the rescue, was sent out of my personal frustration, due to a number
of problems with getting the story officially published in a publication
I look up to. There was only one, and it wouldn't wash due to ethical
considerations and the hassle factor. While I find it useful to refer
back to issues from the incident, I have no other personal interest in
recounting the drama for publication, simply for the sake of
publication. I do however feel that the lessons learned from the
incident would benefit the entire community if they were told. Hardly a
PW digest goes by without at least one post having touched on one of the
topics that came up during the incident (like dawdling paddlers, tow
lines, forecasts, stability, hypothermia, flares, etc., etc.).

I saved the post on my old hard drive, but do not have access to it at
this time. If anyone on this list saved it, please feel free to send it
to whomever asks for it. Please, just don't let it get out to some other
web site, (like Tamia's, etc.) I imagine you can get it off the PW
archives - just look for April 2000!

Sea Kayaker was to publish the report, as written by Matt Broze, but a
third member of the incident apparently never gave his permission for
his version to be sent down for inclusion, which was my fault, and not
done maliciously. This individual has suffered much from post stress
syndrome and loss of confidence. I've been there too, and it is
something most kayakers and even PW'ers, just don't want to talk about
much or really understand deep down. I meet recently with this third
member of the team, and we are working together to come up with a
possible booklet style publication, describing the incident and all the
ramifications, including some of the issues with lack of chart tide
information and forecast issues, not to mention all the psychological
stuff. The idea is to raise funds for the CG and/or Canadian
Hydrographic Services which is underfunfded for field research. So far,
it is just in the concept stage. I would have preferred SK Mag, as they
already have an incident report mechanism, but I'm trying to be as
flexible as I can these days, and not hurt anyone or burn bridges. Life
is just too short (mine probably shorter), and my ultimate concern is to
get as many waves, wind storms, and even sweet, halcyon paddling days in
before I die. What else matters (well, other than family)?

BC'in Ya
Doug Lloyd
