        There's the National Canoe Safety Patrol.  During the summers it
works with NPS rangers on the Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational RIver.
It's been active since 1981 or so and has had a considerable influence on
reducing fatalities on the river.  All the members are volunteers and are
committed to giving at least three weekends per summer to patrolling the
river.  In return they are very well trained in safety and rescue
techniques.
        It's been successful enough that a new chapter has now formed and
will begin patrolling the Lower Delaware Recreational area next year...
