[Paddlewise] paid rescues

A student in my survival class had to get rescued by the coast guard and
search andf rescue this weekend (an Ice storm trapped them on a mountain)
Worried that they would have to pay for the rescue since neither of them was
"hurt". The coast guard told them they don't charge for rescues unless it is a
false alarm....then you pay big time....

(by the way I am giving the student extra credit for surviving)

Couple years ago a someone started screaming mayday, mayday over VHF saying he
was sinking in Icy Strait. Sinking is bad but in Icy Strait with it's strong
tidal currents, sinking is really bad! The coast guard found him drunk with a
couple of inches of water in his boat. (more liquid in him than in the boat!)
they arrested him, fined him heavily, and conficated his boat. Every one here
thought he got what he deserved.
