To me, it seems far better to simply invest the time -- and that
could be substantial time, but that's the way it goes -- to acquire
and practice (on a regular basis, forever) solid roll skills.

Good point. Let's not forget that, in addition to an investment in
time to practice, it's FUN to learn and improve upon one's skills!

Here's my basic philosophy on exercise (activity): If it's not fun,
why am I doing it? Usually, this allows me to get plenty of good
exercise and skill development without even thinking of what I'm
doing as being "work". I paddle because I absolutely love it, and
everything that goes along with it and into learning more is just
more fun stuff to do. Likewise, I enjoy riding a bicycle and walking
and skiing so much that I can't imagine them as being merely
"exercise", and "necessary for my health and well-being", etc. -
though they are. I'm a musician, and I've "practiced" many hours a
day, for most of my life, and never think of it as "work". It's just
something I love to do.

Yes - acquiring and honing a "bombproof" roll (I'm trying to come up
with a non-military replacement phrase for this. I'll let you know
when I think of a good one) may take time and concentration, but what
would you rather be doing during that time? If you can think of
something you'd rather be doing, why not just go do it and forget
about paddling...

Melissa
