Sam: for carrying boats I think it is hard to beat a Jeep Cherokee. It
has three things going for it. First, it has old style rain gutters. This
means you can use any kind of gutter mount rack, including the ones painters
use, which are much cheaper than your yakima, thule, etc. Second, it is not
too high to easily load and unload boats, but still has sufficient ground
clearance and four wheel drive prowess you get you into the out of the way
spots. Third, it is very nearly the same width along its whole length. This
makes it easy to slide the racks forward or backward to match the length of
the load. Finally, the Cherokee is the least expensive of the sport utes. I
see brand new ones advertised for less than 20k., and used ones are
correspondingly inexpensive when compared to Four Runners, etc. I hope when
the redesign comes out, they keep the rain gutters!
