I'm at home and my copy is at work or I'd check the copyright date and quit guessing.<<< The copyright was in 1985 and I remember it was out by Sept., so it must have been 1984 or very early 1985 that I read the manuscript. The present version of that book complete with the drawings colorized and several updates is now called "Expedition Kayaking" fourth edition. As to the broken kayak 5 km. offshore: Maybe they somehow got a loaded kayak across the deck of another kayak to dump out the water but the heavy ends combined with a fragile midsection just did it in. That's about all I could picture given the obvious damaged area. Then again, maybe a Great White Shark rammed it from below. This has happened in So. CA and the damage was similar. Suspect we would have heard about it had it been a shark though.
