[Paddlewise] Replacing a rudder cable - suggestions needed

I loaned one of kayaks out (a tandem) and got it back last week with the
plastic adjustment clip broken and the cable pulled into the hull. Replacing
the clip will be fairly easy, but I'm not sure about how to thread the
cable.

I've tried pushing the cable back into the cockpit without any luck (it's
probably frayed or has a small fitting on the end of it). I was thinking
that the next thing I should do is pull it the rest of the way out, and
either cut off the fitting or frayed end, or replace the cable with a new
one and thread it back through.

I'm leaning toward replacing the cable, my biggest concern is do new cables
tend to fray at the cut end and if so, how would one thread them?

The only thing I've thought of so fat is to solder the end, probably prior
to cutting it, before threading it. Does anyone have any better suggestions.

Thanks - Saul
