Just last Saturday I paddled at Sandy Hook (Gateway). Within an hour of Manhattan is a setting which (on a small scale) replicates what Mr. Diaz has so eloquently described. If you launch at the windsurfing beach you can explorer lovely tidewater pools and a little island with a long sand spit reaching towards to Hook it's self. Wonderfully beautiful and peaceful.
