Most popular hemispheric localization stuff is nonsense. Like any such skill, the more you rehearse it, the less active monitoring it needs. When you're well rehearsed, you don't have to think about the individual moves, you just *do* it, in the same way that you just ride a bicycle without having to think about every little correction. -- mike --------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Edelman mje_at_spamcop.net http://www.foldingkayaks.org (nomadics) http://www.findascope.com (choosing a telescope) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced/forwarded outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: PaddleWise_at_PaddleWise.net Subscriptions: PaddleWise-request_at_PaddleWise.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
There is obviously a consensus between those in academia on this list with respect to "hemispheric localization". So, what does the non-existence of "hemispheric localization" say about early childhood development of fine motor skills and research that has shown that art types are wired different than tech types. Let alone the ability to roll the first time after reading, studying about rolling and watching rolls being performed. Help me out here! Mind you, I am not saying that either is wrong, but that people have unique make ups that predispose them to developing in certain areas of specialty with greater ease than in others. Would we call that failure on the part of the instructor or the student? I think neither. So, what do we call it when someone can't roll? They are: "Not in their right mind." Of all the things I've lost - I miss my mind the most! "So, what do we call it when someone can't roll?" A poor roll model; A rescue opportunity; A snorkler; A disoriented, upside down, half drowned, confused, wet, miserable, uncoordinated, airless, sinus-filled, useless lump of low grade protoplasm masquerading as a kayaker; or Me (too often).
