A couple of days ago a message came across CKF about a news broadcast on TV 3 in Santa Barbara, CA. Supposedly, a family reported someone missing that did not return from paddling at 8:30pm. The kayak was said to have been found the next day with the persons PFD attached under the back bungee's, but no sign of the paddler. I went out to the TV stations web site and found nothing. Since I am not in the reception area for the station I emailed them and asked for confirmation and information. Haven't heard a thing. Does anyone have any information on this? Additionally, while paddling out of Dana Point, CA this afternoon I paddled past a Deputy in a Harbor Patrol boat on my way back in. I stopped and asked if he knew anything about the missing deck hand from the Kara Lee. He said sure, how did I know. After telling him about hearing the radio traffic I told him that I bet the Captain of the fishing boat had been drinking, passed out and woke up looking for a deck hand that wasn't there. He said I hit the nail on the head. He said the deck hand didn't go out that day and they were both drinking before the Captain went out to fish. We all need to watch out for drinking and drunk boaters - commercial fishermen or weekend yachters. A real danger to themselves and others.
