Hi, This has been on nyckayaker but I thought I would pass it on to this list as people may not know of it directly. Richard Nonas, one of our Downtown Boathouse regulars on the New York City scene, is a world-class sculptor (has an exhibit at the Gugenheim in Bilbao, Spain) with an upcoming exhibit in Brooklyn. Details are below. If you are in town for any reason, you may want to check it out. I am not certain how long it will run but you can check with Richard at rnonas_at_thing.net best, ralph diaz Richard's note: Friends and kayakers, Many of you know me as a dedicated Greenland-style paddler, but I'm also an ex-anthropologist, a long-time student of Eskimo and Inuit culture, and a sculptor. --And I've made an exhibition that attempts to pull those diverse interests together. It's called A GHOST IN EVERY KAYAK, and the opening is this Saturday Dec. 2 from 6-8 PM at FIVE MYLES, a gallery and performance space in Brooklyn. I've used five boats, my own sculpture and drawings, some tapes of Eskimo Throat-Singing, an 1936 East Greenlandic film made by Knud Rasmussen, and many old Inuit photographs. --I've used them in the same way, and for the same reasons, I use massive chunks of wood, steel or stone; used them to seek the same emotional and formal power. --This is an exhibition not about arctic history or anthropology or even native boats, but rather one about the ability of intense special objects like kayaks (or sculptures) to encroach outrageously on one another, and on the world around them. It is, as all my sculpture is, about the emotionally charged places that powerful objects make. --It is an exhibition about how art happens. And I'd like to invite you to see it. --And to see the boats, film, photos and music that are part of it : the 25 foot three-hole Baidarka made by Ron Franklin, the 19 inch wide East Greenland that I made, the extraordinary replica made by Harvey Golden of a 17 inch wide South Greenland skin kayak that has been in a Dutch museum for more than a hundred years, the full-scale mock-up of that same boat I made to see if I could fit into the one Harvey was building, the pre-WW II Kleeper frame that adds another level of history, the rare and wonderful film PAALUP NULIASSARNERA (Palos' Wedding), and the old Eskimo songs from the Library of Congress. --Try to come.
