I pulled the books from the library and you are correct.  The author that I 
was referring to is Tim Severin.  The book on the curragh is "The Brendan 
Voyage".   His book with descriptions of old style boat construction is "In 
Search of Moby Dick - The Quest for the White Whale".

I recommend both of these books as well written and informative without 
being boring.  Both good reads.  Mr. Severin is a historian, adventurer and 
prolific author who has written twelve plus books of the same type as 
these.  I wish he had written on one of the kayak building societies and 
how they lived in such hostile environments and developed their kayaks and 
equipment.  If someone can recommend another author on this subject, please 
let me know.
