There were 50 wooden kayaks at the West Coast Wood Kayak Rendezvous in
August, and I'd guess that a sizeable number of the Pacific northwest
amateur builders were represented there. There seem to be more wood
kayak builders in New England, judging by the larger size of the
Newfound Rendezvous. Your estimate for the North American production of
strippers seems reasonable.

Seeing 40 wooden kayaks on the water at one time is an unbelievable
sight!

Not necessarily--I put about $300 in my S&G, but $350 in my stripper.
It would have been the same price, or lower than the S&G if I had built
it to the same level of quality. Instead, I built a custom veneer
coaming and used extra ash for an outer stem for impact resistance. I
don't think strippers are by their nature more expensive, but the
potential and temptation to get a little more carried away with more
expensive materials is very real!!
