[Paddlewise] old rollers

 I am new to this list and only a kayaker for one year.  I am past 60 years of

  I am close to your age and have gotten a reasonable roll in a sea kayak.  For me it 
took several sessions but once done one realizes it is not strength but technique-- I 
still have much to learn and improve upon.  I think older person may learn a little 
slower than a younger person because we are not so coordinated as we once were- it 
is not strength.  I use a C to C with an extended paddle for the easiest roll ( good for 
sea kayaks not as useful for white water) the extra leverage really helps.  As another 
posted the set up is critical and a good relaxed hip movement and follow through are 
important. In my last practice session I actually rolled so forceably that I went over the 
other side and had to roll again.  Like riding a bike I think once the basic feeling is 
there you can beome less thoughful about technique and still make it work. The good 
rollers in our club can pick their head up from the water first and still make the roll-- I 
don't know how???  Like a good golf swing rolling can always be improved.  Age 
should not be a problem- be patient and persistent.  Good luck.

   Altho I do agree that rolling is not essential for kayaking, I think that it is nearly 
essential for maximum enjoyment and safety--for white water it is essential.  No 
rescue technique can beat a roll.  It is worth the time and effort to learn.
