Let me elucidate on that a bit. Confidence through imaging plays a HUGE role in ability. In many sports, coaches teach their athletes to envision the 'move' they have to make before making it. It works in football and it works in kayaking. Seeing yourself making that landing through the rock garden before actually doing it CAN be the difference between sucess and failure. When he/she is successful, the likelihood of being successful again is higher. An 'expert' is someone who can do this time after time... and not die. Of course, this is just one small part of the equation. There's also experience, technical expertise, and a healthy respect for the powers of nature.
