I have to agree with Duane on the jet ski thing. I think they should be restricted from particularly sensitive areas, and I have certainly had my share of run ins with some particularly stupid riders. Once two teenagers decided it would be great fun to soak me with their roostertail while I was paddling. They shot right at me and only turned out when very close to me. This was inexcusable just taking the soaking into account, and very dangerous when one considers what might have happened if they had mistimed the turn. Nonetheless, many paddlers have a problem with jet skiers that is borderline fanatic. Putting aside the justice of banning these things that so many enjoy, I think general attacks on jet skis are bad policy from a self interest perspective. Everyone who loves to recreate on the water has a common cause: we want access, which costs money and, at least around here, the political will to overcome local opposition. We need to make common cause with other boaters. Further, anyone who thinks that because paddlers do not use motors environmentalists and local waterfront types will welcome us is dreaming. Many of the environmentalists seem to oppose any kind of use of our waterways. And local landowners often hate kayakers, who bob a couple of feet off their property while they are trying to enjoy it, land to relieve self on property, etc. Rich, who also wonders how one paddles and armchair. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). If you can't tell the difference between enjoying an activity and someone else's property rights, stay home!
