On the subject of portable racks, I have been using
the foam racks that REI sells for kayaks and they have
always worked just fine. They aren't expensive at all
and they can be put on a car in no time at all (easily
under five minutes). Upon my return to the US a
couple of weeks ago, I purchased an SUV and those
smaller blue foam racks no longer fit. Well, no
problem. REI now sells larger foam racks for larger
vehicals. They slip right over the racks that are
already installed on my vehical, and they work great
too! So, if you are looking for racks and you don't
know what to get, I suggest trying these out because
they are inexpensive, easy to install/remove, and they
pack up nice and small too.

How heavy is your boat? this is only good for about 36 pounds. My boat is
over 50.

I bought them when I saw them (haven't seen them since) to have for my next
fly 'n camp trip (no date). Hopefully, with something small and light like
the Puffin.

I'm afraid I'm not about to take off my Yakima set-up to test them out.
Though I did suggest to a friend (who has one of those nice expensive cars)
that he should try it out one day.
