So.......you tend to anthromorphize your wee bonny boaty, do ye? There is a long and illustrious nautical history of 'jinxed' boats from the 'Chesaepeke', considered jinxed in an assault on the Brits on Lake Erie in 1813....sure enough, she was swisscheesed by British gunnery and abandoned.......to the current threads on wearing a 'deadman's boat'. None of this would rattle me. Well......the grapeshot would. The Aleuts had a rather morose legend about a chap who offended his baidarka who subsequently exacted some pretty lethal recompense upon him. Stop me if you've heard this one. Joe Aleut was hunting for.....well, what all good Aleuts hunt for, when he got separated from his brother in law in pea-soup fog and hopelessly lost. He then started calling for help in the fog, but was too far adrift for any one to hear him and come to help........except for his BOOOOOAATTTTT. (insert scary zither music here) The story continues that his baidarka, (skin on frame affair.....fast, multichined, bifurcated bow.....truncated stern....and a real wise ass), pipes up and informs the fog-bound Aleut that, 'because he didn't transfer some ot the warmth of his wife to his faithful baidarka, after having conjugal relations (with his wife), by rubbing down her (the baidarka's) gunwales........(afterplay?), resultantly, you don't get carried safely to land!' (Hey-- it slipped my mind.....we were smoking and stuff) Or words to that effect. He drowned. His brother in law collected the body. His brother in law started spending quality time with his baidarka. Moral of the story? Don't smoke in bed. Now off to bed, my lambies. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
