Sailors' gloves work well, as well. You can get fingerless gloves with a pleather palm for grip, and you can get the same with fingers. Gives some UV protection to the back of the hand. Gill (UK) makes excellent gloves --- seem to be the glove of choice in the sailing community in Annapolis, Maryland, where, in summer, you can almost walk across the harbor by hopping across sailboat decks.
