RE: Speed - yes, speed might be one measure of paddling efficiency. Stamina is another measure of paddling efficiency, and for most of us it has only a vague general relationship to racing ability. Speed and stamina might both be valuable when fighting a current (tidal or otherwise). Stamina is priceless when it comes to having the reserve energy to brace, roll, etc in emergency situations. But don't forget - the point of paddling is to have fun. Watch those herons, canvasbacks, barbie dolls, whatever. Sit there. Enjoy the out of doors. If you need a fast ride, buy a jetski - but stay off the places I paddle <G> .
