RE: Speed - yes, speed might be one measure of paddling efficiency. Stamina is another measure of paddling efficiency, and for most of us it has only a vague general relationship to racing ability. Speed and stamina might both be valuable when fighting a current (tidal or otherwise). Stamina is priceless when it comes to having the reserve energy to brace, roll, etc in emergency situations. But don't forget - the point of paddling is to have fun. Watch those herons, canvasbacks, barbie dolls, whatever. Sit there. Enjoy the out of doors. If you need a fast ride, buy a jetski - but stay off the places I paddle <G> . Thanks, Bill. I think that's bringing it back to where it belongs - at least for me. A friend of mine told me (just before I went for my first surf lesson) that when she took her first lesson the instructor said to her, "Do you know what the most important thing is?," to which she responded, "Yes, to stay up." And the ibstructor said, "No. To have fun." We do too many things because we have to do them or because we "ought" to do them. Kayaking is something to do because we want to do it. Whatever "it" is - watching the birds, enjoying the outdoors, or rolling, bracing and playing in the surf. Joan O > But don't forget - the point of paddling is to have fun.
