Dear Friends: We were blessed this week with having Nigel Dennis here to train and give BCU certification. An awfully nice guy, Nigel is a great teacher, too. Jacqueline and I passed our 3-star BCU certification. We were planning on going for the 4, since we can roll, but time restraints prevented it. But that leaves us an excuse to travel to Angelsey, Wales, no? Best wishes from sunny Israel, where the paddling is great, but where the peace process is making a wet exit, unfortunately... I had the opportunity to get some training from Nigel this summer as well at the AKT skills symposium. I actually took the BCU certification and training from Scott Fairity but took a navigation course and support strokes session from Nigel. My braces are pretty good but he pointed out something to someone else that made them even better. On a high brace, he suggested thinking of the non-bracing hand (the left hand if you're falling over to the right) as a fulcrum point and to make sure that it doesn't move up when trying to brace. If it does the paddle shaft goes vertical. > We were >planning on going for the 4, since we can roll, but time restraints >prevented it. There's a lot mroe the the 4 Star certification than just the ability to roll, as you probably know. Mostly it's the same skills (with the addition of navigation and exerience on longer trips) but under more challenging conditions including surfing small waves. >But that leaves us an excuse to travel to Angelsey, Wales, no? Sounds reasonable to me. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). But that leaves us an excuse to travel to Angelsey, Wales, > no? You should definitively do that trip. Great teachers and paddlers, wonderful coast, strong currents. A friend and me tried to get a 4-star last March, but we failed (hadn't been prepared for *really good* bracing and sculling). But we spent a wonderful week there with storm, sunshine, seals, a night-paddle with aurora borealis and phosphorescent plankton. My friend Rainer is still amazed at how good and simple Pete, one of our guides, explained navigation in tidal areas. And we even got to see how Nigel's kayaks are being made. You might try the Sea Kayak Symposium, usually in the beginning of May, where many sea kayakers get together for different trainings, trips, speeches et al.
