For those who are not familiar with the type of flanges I'm talking about, 
there are good pictures and drawings on the Great River Outfitters (US 
importers of VCP and NDK) site (http://users.erols.com/rapids/GRO/), under 
kayaks.  Look particularly at the NDK Romany Explorer, which has a more 
extensive flange than the Nordkapp or some of the other kayaks I have seen.
