An alternate way to get a good fit is to to cover the deck where you want the compass with plastic wrap, paint epoxy resin on the bottom of the mount after it has been rough-shaped, and then press it into place on top of the plastic wrap. When it has set, remove the mount and the plastic wrap, and trim the excess resin.
