Don't confuse declination and variation (difference with magnetic north on land and sea, respectively) with deviation which is error attributable to local interference from ferrous or nickel or electromagnetic objects in the proximity of the mounted compass such as a radio or speargun etc. I always navigate using magnetic north as indicated on the compass-rose on a chart.
