Jochen said in english: <snip lots> <<< I´m planning to fit in my double (first, later the freighting single, also) a 25 Watt VHF Marine Radio (Shipmate RS 8300 SOS). Especially this transmitter is in my opinion almost the best choice for a kayak. The reasons why are extremely different. The best might be, it is a) technically possible, b) it makes sense and c) it now officially permitted in germany to use a handheld transmitter but a 25 Watt set is the better choice. >>> Dereck Hutchinson should know all 'bout this set-up. They used to do it a fair bit in the UK. Heck though, add the radio, then add a bilge pump, then add a few batteries...mind as well get a yacht :-) Personally, I'm waiting for Sat. up-link phones to get to the $1000.00 Canadian mark. They are down to $1,600.00 now from $5,000.00 a couple of years ago. In the mean time, the 5-watt VHF is a little on the weak side admittedly, though it still was a life saver.
