The premier issue of Adventure Kayak Magazine just came out (info at <www.adventurkayakingmag.com>). It is produced by the same folks as put out Rapid magazine (whitewater kayaking). The first issue isn't bad - kind of like a mini Sea Kayaker Magazine issue. It is all Canadian content (and the CRTC didn't even have anything to do with it - inside joke). There is a down-to-earth article on an elderly german fellow who has done some long kayak trips; a tips column on making deck bags by my former paddling buddy Doug Alderson (well, we don't paddle much together anymore); a BCU coach's take on the efficient forward stroke (suggests keeping the lower elbow close to the body which helps the paddle stay more vertical); a great article on Risk Management by Michael Pardy (of ORS) and Nikki Rekman (of North Water) - I think this article was rejected by other mags, but I see some improvements in this one; a bunch of other stuff; and a nice piece by Doug Alderson again, on Hard-Chine Design-Then and Now (written for the lay person, and should be a status-quo format for some of our illustrious PW posters). The "parting shot" is of a paddler entering the surf - well, there really isn't any surf, but I was comparing it as a kind of lame version of the Sea Kayaker pic with Melissa. Hope the magazine doesn't turn out to also be just a lame version of SK.
