        Offhand, it reminds me of some kind of somersaulting activity.
However, I've heard this used in the South to describe stopping on the edge
line of an eddy.  Rather than turning, facing upstream, and stopping, you
instead slowly spin a full circle.  Gives you a little breather, take in the
scenery, and maybe lose a little distance if you're too close to the boat
ahead of you......
