What I have found tarps useful for is in cooler weather even without rain.
Being under one, reduces your heat loss while you are hanging around in the
evening.  And if you have a candle burning for light, its little bit of
warmth stays with you under the tarp.  You can feel an enormous difference
in temperature if you are sitting under the tarp and then step out from
under it.  Has got to be 15 degrees warmer under one unless the wind is
howling and wind chill factor takes over.
