Reminds me of an old (really old) Star Trek episode where these alien beings came on board who thrived on negative energy. They'd try to stir things up (I think in this case, between the crew and the Klingons), just to bask and soak in the negativity of it all. The more conflict that arose, the stronger the alien beings became. To dispel the evil aliens, they just came to civil terms with one another and the beings simply faded away. It never occured to me at the time that this was a real-life metaphor!
