Hi,

Looking back there seems to be the general problem that the
manufacturers understanding/definition of waterproof is frequently
very different from the expectations of us wet boating folks (in
contrast to dry boaters, like yachters and most power boaters). I
learned that when my first GPS drowned . It was replaced by the
manufacturer without any questions asked -good service or guilt?-.
My conclusion was that GPS, VHF, and cell phone travel in a a dry
bag (aquapak looks pretty though), to increase the chance that
they still work when I need them.
Think about it, even if something is supposed to be waterproof and
proofed in the past to be waterproof, there is a chance that it gave
up its waterproofness just when you really need it to navigate or
make a distress call. Nice if the manufacturers policy is to replace
units that failed -even after it was used for some time-, but that is
only of interest if you make it back to claim that service.
This risk can be significantly lowered by using a suitable dry bag.
Also not a 100% insurance, but at least you did what was possible.

My 0.02$

Ulli

P.S. I hope the Canon Shure Shot A1 I bought, it's rated
waterproof down to 15 feet, will survive my upcomming kayaking
adventures.

(All spelling errors are intentional and are there to show new
and improved ways of spelling old words.)
