When I lived out in California I used to go fishing for stripped bass
quite a bit with a good friend of mine. We'd head up to the Sacramento-
San Joaquin river delta area (a little over an hour from where we lived).
Both of us had canoes and he had equipped his with a 3hp Minn Kota electric
trolling motor. On one particular trip we were only on the water for
a few minutes before I hooked into a good one. After 20 minutes or so
I landed a 9 pound striper. It was big enough that it could pull the
canoe around but the electric trolling motor was used to tire the fish
out. Still, landing a fish that big in a canoe was a challenge and he
commented that if we hooked anything we'd have trouble. About fifteen
minutes later I hear "got one...oh, shit, we're in trouble" as his
reel screamed when the fish took off. He spun that motor around and
we started to chase it down. As fast as that canoe would go, the
fish was still running away from us. We finally caught up to it
and he began to tire the fish out by dragging it around with the motor.
Eventually he got it up next to the canoe and I grabbed the net and
lifted the fish out...or at least I tried. It was so heavy that it
bent the aluminum ring on the net. I was able to grab the ring on
the net rather than use the handle and pulled the fish into the fish
into my lap. About a foot of the head and tail was still hanging
over the side. This stripped bass was 44" long and 32 pounds. We
called it a day after that and just went ashore.

Both fish were caught using 5 1/2' ultralight spinning rods and 6
pound test line.
